Gay Lions -In what can be described as the weirdest of bizarre events, two male Lions were spotted putting on a very rare public display of affection in Kenya. First off, are there gay animals on planet earth?
Go on and chew on this question, while we add that unlike what can often be a violent end to mating between a male and a female lion, this pair was seen nuzzling each other after the mounting had taken place.
The very rare mating experience was captured by a wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein, from Wimbledon, London who said he first observed them standing side-by-side in Kenya’s Masai Mara, before one lay down and was gently mounted by the other.
It gets more interesting; Goldstein said that unlike the ‘straight’ lions whose mating lasts for a few seconds, the gay lions were caught in their romantic entanglement for so long that he couldn’t help but smile.
What else made it different and unusual? Goldstein continues that the obvious affection afterward was very evident, as opposed to the violent withdrawal when male and female mate.
There have been reported cases of homosexual activities in lions. Scientific reports say that eight percent of all observed mountings in the wild are male on male.
Lions are by no means the only animal species where homosexual relations exits. Biologists have recorded same-sex sexual activity in more than 450 species including flamingos, bison, beetles, and warthogs.
Female animals too are not missing in action. A 2010 study of Alaskan Albatrosses found that a third of the pairs actually consisted of two females.
This recent incident may have answered the widely asked question which pertains to sexuality in animals.
We cannot ignore the fact that the wildlife photographer is not a scientist; nonetheless, this recent discovery surely justifies the existence of the seemingly unending argument on the sexuality of animals.
