Galaxy International School, one of Ghana’s prestigious schools, emerged one of the biggest winners at Genius Science Olympiad held at Oswego USA.
The school was well represented by Alex Amankwa-Asare and Tom Rashad Van der Grinten, whose project title was ‘Saving Water in Irrigation Systems using Moisture Sensors.’

The pair was able to make it following a wonderful exhibition of an automated irrigation system they designed. The system uses Arduino micro controller and soil moisture sensor and is structured in such a way that its microprocessor automatically dictates sections of farmland that need water. Once the machine does this, it automatically activates water pumps to water the plants.
The idea behind the project is to curtail water wastage on farmland. And this can be achieved by watering only sections of farmland that need water and once it is done, the machine deactivates through the moisture sensor when there is enough water in the soil.
Galaxy International School, founded in 2001 is located in Accra, Ghana. The school has three campuses in the city – a secondary school in Ashaley Botwe, a primary school and preschool located in East Legon.
Currently, 450 students from over 47 countries are studying in the renowned school. The school provides day and boarding facilities to children living in Ghana and other foreign countries – including United States of America, Canada, England, Turkey, China, Nigeria, South Africa and Gabon.
Recently, the school organized a Science Fair, aimed at enlightening and reminding pupils and the society at large about the paramount roles Science and Technology play in tackling challenges in life.
During the Fair, opportunities were given to pupils between the ages of three and sixteen to showcase various Science experiments in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Social Sciences and the Arts at the one-day Fair.

The school has also won several international honours and project competition.
