A rare act of benevolence was exhibited by Ghana’s youngest Member of Parliament towards her constituents. Kwabre East MP, Hon Francisca Oteng Mensah donated her first three months salary to her constituents in fulfillment of a promise she made during her campaign in 2016.
The 24-year-old Kwabre East MP who ran on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the parliamentary candidate for the constituency, had promised among other things, her first three months salary as MP.
Honorable Francisca who donated her salary together with taxi cabs to her constituents has also promised to fulfill other campaign promises she made to the people. The MP for Kwabre East Constituency in the Ashanti region disclosed this in a short durbar at the constituency, on Sunday 25 June, 2017.
Indeed, this profound generosity and courage shown by the Kwabre East MP should be of precedence to her counterparts and predecessors. Despite her complaints of various forms of financial pressure mounted on her as MP, the young parliamentarian still deemed it thoughtful to donate her hard earned salary for the benefit of her constituents.
It can be recalled that few months into her position as MP, Miss Francisca Oteng revealed some of the challenges MPs including herself, face in trying to meet the people’s demands. The young MP had said that despite her age and inexperience, her constituents make excessive demands ranging from school fees, jobs, and food.
The 24-year-old lamented over the fact that the political class is stereotyped as a far more comfortable class. According to her, despite delays in payment of MPs’ salaries, Parliamentarians are constantly bombarded with demands from their constituents who obviously have no idea how challenging the life of an MP.
But all that was not enough to discourage Miss Oteng Mensah from leading a life of example by sacrificing her earnings for her constituents.
The 24-year-old defied all odds both in her party’s parliamentary primary and the general elections 2016 to become the youngest MP since the inception of the Fourth Republic for the people of Kwabre-East in the Ashanti Region. The young MP had earlier highlighted her plans for her constituency. They include environment, gender issues, and education.
The MP was born at Aboaso Hospital on February 14, 1993, in Mamponten in the Ashanti Region to Dr. Kwaku Oteng, Managing Director (MD) of the Angel Group of Companies, and Mrs. Joyce Oteng, a business woman.
