Born on 13th December, 1981, Yakubu was reported to be put under oxygen before giving up the ghost. He died of an undisclosed illness aged 36.

Yakubu Abubakar, who played a key role in helping Ghana qualify for their first FIFA World Cup in 2006, played for the national team between 2002 and 2006, making a total of 16 appearances his home country.

The Former Black Stars player also played for Amsterdam and Dutch club, Ajax and Vitesse respectively. He played for Ajax from 1999 to 2005 and Vitesse from 2005 to 2009, winning the Eridivise twice with Ajax in 2002 and 2004.

Born in Tema, Yakubu joined AFC Ajax in 1999 at 17, going on to remain in the Netherlands for one full decade. He made his Eredivisie debut on 19 April 2000, playing 50 minutes in a 1–1 away draw against FC Den Bosch and finishing his first season with only five appearances. Yakubu played in an average of 15 league games in the following four years, helping the Amsterdam side to two national championships[1] and the 2002 edition of the Dutch Cup.

In the 2004–05 season, he was sent on loan to fellow league team Vitesse Arnhem. In the ensuing off-season, Yakubu moved over to Vitesse permanently and stayed with the club for the next four years, leaving in 2009 summer. In early October, he had an unsuccessful trial with TSV 1860 München from Germany.

May his soul rest in peace.
