The “jostling” for the flag bearer slot of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2020 presidential race is “deliberate” on the part of “all” the persons who have been speculated to harbour presidential ambitions in the next four years, former Roads Minister Inusah Fuseini has said.

After the NDC lost the 2016 elections, a few stalwarts in the NDC or their assigns have made comments and gestures suggesting they will pitch in the 2020 race.

They include former Trade Minister Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Sylvester Mensah, former Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, Mr Goosie Tanoh, Majority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, former Vice Chancellor of UPSA Prof Joshua Alabi, and Second Deputy Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Former President John Mahama is also speculated to be garnering steam for a comeback although he has not expressly said whether or not he will run again.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanna Tetteh, who was also speculated to harbour presidential ambitions, recently said she had never wanted to be president.

Speaking on Multi TV’s news analysis programme Newsfile about the jostling within the NDC for the flag bearer slot, Mr Fuseini, who is the MP for Tamale Central, told host Samson Lardy Anyenini: “What is happening is jostling, I mean people are jostling first of all to be known, and secondly to pre-position themselves.

“It’s deliberate. I mean all of them are clearly going round forming groups, movements and whatnot clearly with the view to transforming [them into a presidential support base].”

He said all those jostling are shying away from making a definite public pronouncement on it because coming out in that manner would flout the party’s constitution.
