President Nana Addo has extended the office tenure of the Inspector General of Police, IGP David Asante Apeatu by two years. The two-year extension is in form of a contract to enable the IGP continue his work after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.

Asante Apeatu is supposed to proceed on his compulsory retirement after clocking 60 on the 15th of August, 2017. But the President has decided to retain him in the IGP position for the next two years.

It is believed that the President arrived at the decision to extend the IGP’s tenure after considering the enormous good works laden on his shoulders.

Mr. David Asnate Apeatu since his assumption of duties as the Inspector General seven months ago, has carried out four major reshuffles in the Ghana Police Service; all directed at making the service more efficient.

Another major perceived reason why Nana Addo decided to retain IGP Apeatu in office for the next two years has to do with the IGP’s determined goal to make the GPS the best in Africa by year 2020.

Speaking at the commencement of a four-day workshop for members of the Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Department (PAD), IGP Asante Apeatu declared his readiness to completely transform the Ghana Police Service.

Making reference to his recent goal-driven overhauls of the Police Service, Mr. Apeatu said they are all aimed at making the Ghana Police Service capable of rendering world class service “up to standard of international best practice”.

‘’In doing this, our goal is to position the Ghana Police Service in the world and a leading one in Africa by 2020,” the IGP said.

From the foregoing, and for some other yet-to-be-revealed reasons, it could be concluded that Akufo-Addo doe not want IGP Asante Apeatu to be stopped by retirement; hence the two-year contract to enable him continue with his good works.

David Asante Apeatu was appointed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), by President Nana Akufo-Addo, on 25th January, 2017. Prior to his appointment, he was the Director General for Information Communication Technology Department at the Police Headquarters, as well as the head of the Marine Police.

Mr. Apeatu replaced the then outgoing IGP John Kudalor who was appointed by former President John Dramani Mahama to the position from an acting capacity in November 2015.

Asante Apeatu is a Masters’ Degree holder in Chemistry from the Kharkov State University in Russia, and a trained Forensic Scientist in various disciplines such as Document Examination, Firearms and Ballistics, and Controlled Drug Analysis.

Mr. Apeatu since the commencement of his Policing career, has occupied several prominent positions, and has also made many remarkable achievements which include among others, the following:

* He was once the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the service.

* In 2007 he was appointed Director of the Specialised Crime and Analysis (SCA) Unit at the INTERPOL headquarters in Lyon France.

* Internationally, he had worked at the Sarajevo Police Academy as an Instructor in Human Dignity, Police Ethics and Criminal Investigations under the auspices of the United Nations Task Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1997 to 1998.

* He was the team leader in a successful homicide investigation under the request of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNAMIL).

* He was the team leader in investigations into the mass murder of more than 50 people, mostly West African nationals, in The Gambia.

* In Ghana, he was the Lead Investigator in the serial killing of more than 30 women that led to the arrest of a culprit who had been prosecuted, convicted and sentenced to death.

* Under the supervision of Mr Asante-Apeatu and based on intelligence, the CID successfully conducted an operation that resulted in the seizure of 588 kilogrammes of cocaine with the street value of about $38 million.

We say congratulations to IGP Apeatu and also encourage him to keep it up!
