Speaking at the sod cutting ceremony, President Nana Addo said that the Appolonia Housing project “is in line with his government’s vision of using an appropriate mix of public policy, and public-private investments, to deliver quality, affordable social housing and private housing solutions, that meet the needs and financial capacity of the ordinary Ghanaian”. According to the President, the housing project comes as a relief to all Ghanaians who are yearning to own a home, or in the least, a decent rented accommodation.

Nana Addo who described Apolonia City as a “laudable initiative”, expressed happiness at the developmental project, stating that the Appolonia community is a shareholder in the business.

“Contractors working on the building projects are also to employ and provide skills training to members of the community. This is a laudable initiative, a model I would encourage others to emulate,” the President said.

The multi-million dollar project which will be financed in partnership by Appolonia City and Ghana Home Loans, will see to the construction of 2000 affordable housing units for Ghanaian residents. The partnership brings together Ghana Home Loans, backed by the Abraaj Group, local promoters, with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), and Rendeavour, the developer of Appolonia City in a unique partnership between the Chiefs, elders and community of the Appolonia stool.

The pilot phase of the project involves the construction of 100 semi-detached, detached and terraced housing units on a six-acre land in the city, and is expected to be completed in 18 months. The project is targeted at helping to reduce Ghana’s housing deficit serving as an engine of local development, at the national and regional scales respectively. Ghana Home Loans will also provide flexible financing solutions that will enable Ghanaians acquire their dream homes in the area on completion of the houses.

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Jackson who was also at the occasion, described the initiative as “an investment in Ghana’s future”, pointing out that it will facilitate his priority of deepening commercial engagement in a way that benefit both Ghanaians and Americans.

The housing project will benefit from Appolonia City’s high-quality infrastructure, including tarred roads, ICT networking and integrated safety and security systems, as well as social infrastructure, such as schools, clinics, open green space and shops.
