In 2012, Ghana passed Mental Health Act 846 but the implementation is still pending with doctor-patient ratio currently 1:1.7 million.

Although there is a lack of reliable data regarding the prevalence of mental disorders in the country, the World Health Organisation estimates that approximately 13 percent of Ghanaians suffer from a mental disorder.

Mental health care is one of the biggest challenges confronting the Ghanaian health sector with hospitals still grappling with the overflow of patients.

Accra, Pantang, and Ankaful Psychiatric Hospitals are the only major facilities that provide mental health care but inadequate resources to deal with critical challenges like infrastructure, finance and medication remain a challenge.
