The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers, Ghana (COPEC) is demanding the immediate reduction and stabilization of fuel prices in the country.

It says “the excuses must indeed end, the taxes must be reduced to bring some reductions and stability in prices”.

According to COPEC, there has been a lot of hardship in the country as a result of “a persistent increase in the price of petroleum products in Ghana”, a phenomenon they have observed for the past five months.

In a notice of demonstration signed by the Executive Secretary, Duncan Amoah, COPEC invited the public who “feel the pressures of these incessant increases in fuel prices” to join what the “peaceful expression of uneasiness in our pockets”.

As contained in the notice, efforts to get the government address the issue of fuel price increases by reviewing the pricing formulae has proved futile and prices continue to go up with the latest increment being Monday.

“Several press releases on the subject matter including a recent press conference addressed by the leader of the largest workers union in the country-ICU have so far yielded very little results as the increases continue unabated, with the most recent one being yesterday.”

COPEC says the unresponsive posture of government is what has necessitated the move to join Transport Unions and Industrial and Commercial Workers Union across the country “to stage a peaceful street protest and demonstration”.

The event is slated to come off Wednesday at exactly 7am.

The walk, it stated, will start from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra through some major streets to the Accra Arts Centre, where the demonstrators will present another petition to the ministries of Energy and Finance, Parliament and the Office of the President.
