The Minister of Finance in April 2017 directed that names of 26, 589 public sector workers be removed from government’s payroll noting that those who were to be affected (Ghost names) had not been registered on the new Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) biometric system.

Speaking, during a meeting with the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), in the wake of protests and threats of strikes from a number of labour unions, President Nana Akufo-Addo remained frank with the many agitating worker unions in the country by simply admitting that government is cash-strapped.

“There are some things that should be easy to deal with but will prove difficult for some time to come largely because there is no money. But now arrangements are being put place that will enhance the generation by the state,” the president explained.

But according to Kofi Adams, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) believed holding the political office was easy.

He said cutting down the number of ministers presently will aid the NPP government get funds to pay public sector workers in the country.

“They are rather wasting the money. If he wants money, he should cut down the number of his ministers so generates income. They thought governance was easy…” he advised.

He further added that, the ghost names brouhaha was part of a grand scheme by government to avoid due payment of the labour unions since there is no funds left as the 110 ministers squandered it all from the public accounts.

Mr Adams further claimed under erstwhile Mahama’s administration set up solid structures to revive the economy so the NPP has no excuse to fail.

“They should find a way to pay them than to intentionally cutting people off the pay role. He has used the money for the ministers instead. He has paid to his 110 ministers to do party…”

“Under Mahama we implement structures to balance the economy. Bawumia claims they won’t take a loan yet they have borrowed 13 billion in five months. He thought we [NDC] had machines to print monies…” he said on Neat FM Wednesday.
