More drama has ensued among principal officers of the Electoral Commission (EC). This is following agitations by some aggrieved employees of the commission for the impeachment of the EC chairperson Charlotte Osei.

The latest development in the growing rift within the EC saw the deputy Chairperson of the commission in charge of Corporate Services, Georgina Opoku Amankwah, accuse her boss, Charlotte Osei, of being unfit to head the EC. Mrs. Amankwah is of the opinion that the EC boss lacks the requisite managerial skills in public administration.

Amankwah was speaking in response to claims of corruption made against her by the EC boss. The EC deputy chair for Corporate services touted her experience in the public sector, noting she had chaired the entire Ghana Trade Union Congress, which is made up of different organizations. This was to debunk Charlotte Osei’s claims that she lacked the managerial experience or capacity of corporate governances.

It has been a war of words between principal officers of the Electoral Commission. Prior to Mrs. Amankwa’s outburst with Ms Osei, the EC boss had a session with the Deputy Chair of Operations, Amadu Sulley. Charlotte Osei accused Amadu Sulley of persistently affecting illegal vote transfers from his office on the Voter management system.

The EC boss said the act was a breach of the law and operational policies of the Commission. According to her, such actions have “major implications for the integrity of the work of the Commission and constitutes an abuse of office.”

Charlotte Osei made this claim in response to petitions for her impeachment. She further alleged that Amadu Sulley collected up to GHC 6 million in cash from political parties for the organization of party primaries without recourse to the structures of the Commission.

Ms Osei said she would launch a full-scale investigation into the conduct of Mr. Sulley and other Commissioners believed to be violating rules governing the Commission.

A petition signed by lawyer Maxwell Opoku Agyeman on behalf of some aggrieved employees at the Commission stated that the EC boss breached the Procurement Law in producing goods and services for the organization.

In the six paged document, the employees alleged among other things, that Ms Osei singularly acquired a V8 Land Cruiser and awarded million dollar contratcs without recourse to the laid down administrative structures.

Following the EC boss impeachment petition, Charlotte Osei responded by requesting for the names of workers who made the claims for her removal. This was to enable her to take legal action against them for the defamatory statements contained in their petition.
