Panama Papers journalist -It is a sad and mournful state for investigative journalists across the globe.
Maltese investigative journalist and blogger from Malta who was known for her reporting on governmental corruption were killed in a bomb explosion near her home on Monday.
Daphne Caruana Galizia, 53, must have sworn she would get to the end of the mind-blowing investigations which took the media and the world by storm.
However, the undeterred and vibrant investigative journalist was killed after a bomb exploded in her car on Monday, October 16, 2017.
The Panama Papers Journalist was driving her car, a Peugeot 108 when it was destroyed by a powerful explosive device which blew the vehicle into several pieces and threw the debris into a nearby field.
Late Caruana was known for her daring and thought-provoking revelations which saturated her blog described as a thorn in the side of influential and underworld figures in Malta.
The journalist who was described as a ‘one-woman WikiLeaks’, had her blog sometimes swell to 400,000 readers, nearly equal to the country’s population.
Though no one has claimed responsibility for the attack, it sure has all signs of political motivation written over it. Malta’s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said her death resulted from a “barbaric attack” that also amounted to an assault on freedom of expression.
Galizia’s death has been widely condemned by officials and NGOs across Europe and Malta, were the journalist’s relentless fixation on corruption, and political malfeasance had brought her to prominence.
The late investigative journalist had filed a report with the police two weeks ago that she was receiving threats. She had also been sued for libel because of various articles she wrote on her blog Running Commentary.
Galizia spent much of her work in recent years reporting on the Panama Papers -collective investigations which exposed the identities of rich and powerful people around the world; who allegedly had offshore holdings in Panama.
Panama Papers exposed offshore holdings from about 128 politicians and public officials across the globe, including 12 current and former world leaders.
One of the many investigations spearheaded by the Panama Papers Journalist fingered Malta’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, and two of his closest aides, in questionable dealings.
Her documents connected offshore companies linked to the three men with the sale of Maltese passports and payments from the government of Azerbaijan.
Caruana Galizia is survived by her husband and three sons.
