Pupils of Assin Asamankese D/A Primary School can now touch and feel the real computer mouse instead of using stones to represent the device.

A video showing the pupils being made to demonstrate mouse clicks with stones by their teacher in an ICT class had gone viral, leaving Ghanaians wondering how far behind some part of the country are lagging in modern technology education.

The class six teacher in the school, Augustine Kusi revealed that he has no access to a single computer since he started teaching at the school for so many years; hence his decision to improvise with stones.

“Since I came here those who were in class two are now in class six and we haven’t had anything like a computer that we can use to teach,” the teacher explained.

According to him, the school which boasts about 190 pupils has only one desktop computer which has not been functional for the past four years.

But now, the pupils can now have access to real mouse, thanks to the First Lady and her team.

The report which came to the notice of the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo prompted a quick intervention as she, in partnership with Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFFEC) and the Member of Parliament for the area, presented 22 brand new desktop computers to the school on Thursday, June 15.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo donated three (3) desktop computers and other learning resources to the school, officials from GIFFEC presented 14 desktop computers and a projector, while the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Ntim Fordour donated five computers.

All the 22 HP computers were installed at the Junior High School department which has been designated as the ICT Resource Centre for schools in the area.

Reports also reveal that some other corporate bodies have also indicated their intention to go to the aid of the school to ensure the pupils have practical knowledge of ICT.

Meanwhile, the Assin South District Director of the Ghana Education Service, Shirley Coleman, was unhappy about the media reports saying she was unaware of the situation.
