Chief international correspondent of CNN Christiane Amanpour has hit back at Ghanaians, including the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, for condemning and public shaming actress Moesha Budoung for her infamous comments about women on CNN.
Hell broke loose on social media last Wednesday when the actress suggested in an interview with the journalist that Ghana’s economy is such that as a woman, “…you need someone to take care of you; you can’t make enough money as a woman here”

She has for the past week been criticized, shamed and condemned by a number of Ghanaians, mostly women who felt slighted by the comments, more so due to the over generalization of the issue by the actress
But Amanpour who conducted the interview has jumped to the defence of the actress, indicating she has been angered by the condemnation of Moesha by the Ghanaian press and social media.
To her, Moesha “was simply enjoying a carefree, boisterous and mostly humorous conversation with me”.
“As a woman and a journalist, I’m hurt and angry to see such an innocent woman condemned by the press and by many people on social media in this way” Amanpour wrote in a piece on CNN website Wednesday.
The issue appeared to have hit the nerves of the actress that to the point that Amanpour claims “Moesha is not sure she can return to Ghana safely;” a statement which has raised the question of whether her life is threatened.
She has advised the Ghanaian media to reserve judgment for the whole episode of “Sex & Love Around The World,” which she said featured a range of women, young and mature, single, married, divorced, widowed, Christian, Muslim, Vodun, a bead seller, an OBGYN, even a market queen, to be aired and “not judged on one excerpt”.
“I also respectfully urge the President of Ghana and the minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection to stand up for the rights of one of their own,” she appealed
“I want women all over the world to know they can and should be able to talk about matters of sex and love without fear and without shame,” Amanpour added.
