AG Gets More Time To Study Case Against Delta Force 13

The Kumasi Circuit Court has granted the Attorney General more time to study the case against some 13 members of the Delta Force vigilante group who assaulted an appointee of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

It follows a request made by the Police prosecutor, ACP Okyere Darko, who said the AG requires more time to do further investigations into the matter that generated headlines and reignited calls for political vigilantism to be outlawed in Ghana.

The court presided over by Mary Senkyire, however, refused to grant a request by for the defence team to be supplied with copies of the statement of the accused persons and other witnesses in the case, TV3’s William Evans-Nkum reported.

The court took the view that granting that request could hinder further investigations currently ongoing in the case.

Meanwhile, lead counsel for the accused persons, Mathew Appiah, said the request for more time by the AG is a clear indication that the Police did not do a good job in the area of investigations.

“I will not say I’m disappointed; its a procedure of the court. The judge can take a decision. We also have the right to go to the High court if we want to take that decision. We were expecting that because it is the right of the accused person to defend himself, we were thinking the court will order that they give us copies of the statement in the case.

“We are going to sit down as lawyers and decide whether to go to High court to force to get the statement of witnesses as well as the accused persons,” he said.

The case has been stands adjourned until July 13.

Members of the Delta Force, a pro New Patriotic Party group, in March assaulted President Akufo-Addo’s newly-appointed Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, George Agyei who they said did not contribute to the victory of the party, hence cannot work with him.

Police later arrested 13 of them and on April 6, 2017, and were arraigned on charges of disturbances and attacking a public officer, which they denied.
