The analysis came after the West African Examination Council (WAEC) released the provisional results of the 2017 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The council had revealed in a statement released Wednesday, 19th June, that cancidates can access their results via the WAEC website. They also indicated that hard copies of the results will soon be made ready and dispatched to the various senior high schools across the nation.

Meanwhile, analysis of Ghana’s 2017 WASSCE, show significant improvements in candidates performances as against what was obtained in 2016. However, slight setbacks were also recorded. Below are the 5 remarkable areas of improvement and setback.

The 2017 WASSCE in Ghana saw 289, 210 candidates sit for the exams. This figure is 5.45% higher than the 2016 candidature of 274, 262.

Also, whereas the 2016 WASSCE Results were released in August, the 2017 results came on earlier as we are seeing the results a month earlier

From the results, there were improvements in passes (A1-C6) in English Language and Mathematics.

For English Language, 155,077, representing 54.06 per cent obtained between A1 and C6 while 73,409 (25.59%) clocked between D7 and E8. This shows an upward movement in candidates’ performances since 53.19% pass was recorded in the subject in 2016.

Fifty-eight thousand, three hundred and fifty-one (58, 351), representing 20.35 per cent, had F9. For Mathematics, 122,450 (42.73%) had A1-C6 while 106, 024 (37%) had D7-E8. A total of 58,070 (20.27) had F9. This is a clearly significant improvement compared to last year’s performance that had only 32.83% passing Mathematics.

Whereas paper leakages had common place in the 2016 Wassce and some other previous years, no paper leakages were recorded in this year.

In Integrated Science, 125204 (43.66%) passed (A1-C6) while 84851 (29.59%) obtained D7-E8. About 26.75 per cent, translating to 76,693 failed (F9).

Sixty-seven thousand and seventy-eight (67,078) failed in Social Studies while 149, 806 passed (A1-C6). Sixty-nine thousand, seven hundred and ninety-five (69,795) obtained between D7 and E8.

Integrated Science showed slight drop from the 2016 performance (48.48% to 43.66%).

Similarly, there was a drop in the performance in Social Studies (54.93% to 52.25%

Entire results of candidates from 185 schools have been withheld, pending conclusion of investigations into malpractices detected during and after the examinations. Results of candidates from 31 out of the 185 schools were detected with the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software, which showed cheating in the objective tests.

An investigative panel according to WAEC, will look into the cases, to decide if the results will be susbequently released or permanently withheld. They will also decide on further sanctions to be meted out on the offenders, depending on the gravity of the malpractice.

Recall that the West African Examination Council had earlier warned Ghana’s 2017 WASSCE candidates against examination malpractice, making it very clear that such will be rightly exposed with the help of the Item Differentia Profile (IDP).

Howbeit, news of the improvements recorded in candidates’ performances will definitely be a good news to the president, Nana Akufo-Addo who deeply bemoaned students’ performances in the 2016 WASSCE, saying that it was a cear reflection of the nation’s poor standard of education then.
