Out of 80 people rounded up over the killing of Captain Maxwell A. Mahama, five persons have been detained by the police, ASP Irene Oppong, Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, has revealed.

She, however, failed to give the names of the five in police custody, citing security concerns as a reason.

Speaking in an interview with Emefa Apawu on the 505 programme on Class91.3FM on Tuesday May 30, ASP Oppong said: “After screening, we have five people in our custody that we are transferring from the district to the regional headquarters in Cape Coast for investigations to continue.

“For now, we have a bit of information scattered around that led us to discover these five. What we are saying now is that for security reasons we cannot give vivid account of what we have now, but then we are using them also to see if we can rope in other suspects as well.”

Meanwhile, former President Jerry John Rawlings has called for calm and restraint as the security agencies investigate the “unfortunate” lynching of a serving military officer at Denkyira-Obuasi.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 30 May, the former President expressed his sincere condolences to the wife, family and the unit of late Captain Maxwell Mahama for their unfortunate loss.

“Your loss is a loss to the whole country. Your husband, son and brother lost his life serving his country.”

Mr Rawlings added: “Taking the law into our hands in the manner the perpetrators of the act did was an act of cruelty. However, I implore the affected institution to remain calm as the security agencies investigate the matter.”
