Indian rape victim -The story of the 10-year-old pregnant rape victim from India finally ended with the episode of a cesarean birth of a healthy baby by her young mother.
The underaged rape victim who was denied permission for an abortion by the Indian Supreme Court last month has given birth to a baby girl.
The baby weighing 2.5kg (5.5lb) was delivered by Caesarean section in Chandigarh at 09:22 (03:52 GMT). The child who was born prematurely at 35 weeks has been placed in the neo-natal intensive care unit of the hospital where she will remain for the next few days.
The family of the little girl who was raped by her own relative -her mother’s cousin, gained prominence in the media following their attempts to abort the unborn child of their daughter.
The family’s petition to abort the baby was rejected by India’s Supreme court on July 28, 2017, on grounds that the girl was too far into her pregnancy.
The Indian law allows termination only up to 20 weeks under conditions that continuance of the pregnancy would put the life of the mother or the child at risk.
However, in the Indian rape victim’s case, she was up to 32 weeks gone and the foetus was doing well too; shattering every possible reason to support the termination.
Having given birth through the surgical CS section, the 10-year-old is not aware she has birthed a child. She was also not informed she was with child while she was pregnant. During her pregnancy, she was told her bulge was because she had a big stone in her stomach.
The little girl’s pregnancy took her family by surprise as they had no idea their 10-year-old daughter was with child. The family got to know about the pregnancy when the victim complained of a pain in her lower abdomen.
Her condition was confirmed at the hospital to the family’s greatest shock. Considering her chubby nature, the girl’s parents had taken no cognizance of the early signs of pregnancy as well as other body changes till the confirmation by the doctor.
The girl has also alleged she was raped several times in the past seven months by her uncle who has been arrested.
New Born Baby Will Be Put Up for Adoption
The baby who was almost aborted, still remains unwanted as the parents of the girl do not wish to accept her. According to reports, the infant will be looked after by the child welfare committee until she is put up for adoption.
The little girl is expected to remain in the hospital for a week to 10 days, as she is still under observation. The 10-year-old’s story has been described by many sources as the first-ever case of a child so young giving birth.
There have been several petitions in recent years, from child rape victims seeking authorization to terminate pregnancies after 20 weeks. In most cases, these pregnancies are discovered late because the children themselves are not aware of their condition; like in the case of the 10-year-old.
Even after child birth, the poor girl who is very innocent still has no idea what happened to her.
