Nepal marked the International Day of the Commemoration of the Victims of the Holocaust on Friday along with the United Nations, embassies of Israel and Germany as well as the Delegation of the European Union.
A special event was organized in Kathmandu to remember the 6 million people killed during the Holocaust between 1939 to 1945.
Addressing the event, Nepali Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jeewan Bahadur Shahi expressed his condolences to the victims of the Holocaust. The minister hoped that the youth will raise their voices against inhumanity, racism and inequality to stop such happenings in the future.
This year’s Holocaust theme is “educating for better future.”
Valarie Julliand, resident coordinator of the United Nations, read the message of the UN Secretary General while Ambassadors from Germany and the Delegation of the European Union spoke about the Holocaust.
Six candles were lit at the ceremony as per the Jewish tradition where one candle represents one million.
The event was followed by a theater performance “The Diary of Anne Frank” by One World Theater artists directed by Deborah Merola.
