HipHopDX Premiere: In a dramatic black and white visual, Murs brings his “GBKW (God Bless Kanye West)” track to life, which originally set its sights on mental illness, and presumably stemmed from Yeezy’s public outburst and subsequent hospitalization late last year.
“God bless Kanye West and every other brother of color that’s under stress/ They want to make you feel like you are less, even though you didn’t make it gotta deal with this mess,” the Strange Music, Inc. signee repeats throughout the hook, making it clear the sentiment is genuine.
Directed by Joel Darden and Misael Audelo, the video focuses on a young Black kid seemingly doing his best to avoid a dangerous path in life, but he ultimately succumbs to peer pressure. However, there are several layers that are up to the viewer’s interpretation, including social commentary on police brutality. It also reflects Murs’ stance on how the black community needs to heal.
“We pray for each other and I believe in the power of prayer, but we could really use more mental health professionals in our community instead of mocking Kanye West,” Murs explained in a press release. “He’s having problems and he’s having to work through it. He’s like a football player playing hurt, to me.”
The K-R. O.K.- produced song comes from the Living Legends MC’s forthcoming album, Captain California, which is expected to arrive on March 10. Watch the video above and pre-order the album here.
