Joey Barton has been banned for 18 months by the Football Association over allegations the Burnley midfielder placed more than 1,000 bets on matches over a 10-year period.

The FA alleged that Barton, who has also been fined £30,000, made 1,260 bets over a 10-year period and has now hit the 34-year-old with a lengthy ban following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

Burnley confirmed via their official website that Barton, who re-joined the Clarets on a short-term deal in January, plans to appeal the length of his ban.

An FA statement read: “Joey Barton has been suspended from football and all football activity for 18 months with immediate effect after he admitted an FA misconduct charge in relation to betting.

“It was alleged that between 26 March, 2006 and 13 May, 2016, he placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions in breach of FA Rule E8.

“Following the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Burnley midfielder was also fined £30,000 and warned as to his future conduct.”

Barton was previously hit with a one-match ban by the Scottish FA prior to leaving former club Rangers after admitting placing 44 bets between July 1 and September 15 last year.
