Aguero To Arsenal Mooted By Merson As He Speculates On Alexis Exit

Paul Merson fears Alexis Sanchez could leave Arsenal for Manchester City this summer, but says the Gunners should look to take Sergio Aguero in exchange.

The Gunners have seen the future of their 30-goal top scorer called into question throughout the 2016-17 campaign, as he prepares to enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

With no extension to that deal in place, it has been suggested that a sale will be sanctioned while the club can still demand a sizeable fee.

Premier League rivals City have been linked with another raid on Arsenal – having taken several players from Emirates Stadium in recent years – but Merson has suggested that a top marksman could move in the opposite direction if a transfer is done.

The former Gunners midfielder told Sky Sports: “The owner of the club saying he’s not going is dangerous because Pep might want Sanchez and I’d take Aguero all day long at Arsenal.

“That won’t sit well with [Pep] Guardiola because he likes to be in control.”

Another ex-Arsenal star, Charlie Nicholas, has also tipped Sanchez to leave north London this summer.

He is, however, looking for Arsene Wenger to build on his early acquisition of Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer from Schalke and bring in a number of proven performers.

Nicholas added: “He needs another top midfield player with Santi Cazorla out.

“Raphael Varane or Virgil van Dijk would be ideal at centre-back and Alexandre Lacazette is the striker I wanted and hopefully the Atletico Madrid transfer ban means we’ve got a chance.

“We need a solution to Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil now. I think Ozil will stay but Sanchez will probably go and losing 30 goals is really damaging.”

While Arsenal need to add after missing out on Champions League qualification for the first time under Wenger, the Frenchman has previously admitted that he is not expecting to be busy in the summer market.

He told BeIN Sports when pressed on how many additions he expects to make: “Between a maximum of two or three.

“We cannot spend as much as many other clubs because some clubs have external resources that allow them to be basically unlimited.”
