Is Ghana Really Prepared for the Fight Against the Ebola Virus

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has expressed its weariness about Ghana’s preparedness to combat the spread of Ebola in the sub-Saharan region.
The GMA is of the opinion that despite the Ghanaian government’s continuous assurance of the country’s ability to contain the Ebola virus if it were to be detected in Ghana, the current state of nation’s clinics and hospital facilities do not reflect an efficient responsive system.
The hospitals and other healthcare centers do not seem to be sufficiently prepared to receive and treat reported cases, coordinate with other health centers, and effectively utilize surveillance systems.
These concerns were voiced by Dr Justice Yankson, the Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, during an interview with Joy News.
Dr Yankson comments comes after alarming reports that only four out of the nation’s 42 entry points have in place the necessary logistics and protocol to handle potential cases.
The sentiments expressed by Dr Yankson comes as a surprise as several meetings have been spearheaded by the Ministry of Health within the last couple of months to draw up and implement an effective protocol to pre-empt the entry and spread of the Epidemic into Ghana from its neighboring states.
