Former NBA players Steve Nash, Ronny Turiaf and Adonal Foyle were among six people named Friday to an advisory committee guiding strategy for the NBA’s elite talent international training centers.
The move follows the launch of NBA academies in China, Australia, India and Senegal to find and train top prospects from outside the United States.
Nash, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player from Canada, will oversee all aspects of player development.
“I’m really excited to help guide the strategy behind the league’s academies around the world,” Nash said.
“The level of international talent in the NBA is at an all-time high and these academies will be instrumental in identifying and training the next wave of great international players.”
Frenchman Turiaf, who won an NBA title with Miami in 2012, will serve as chief recruiter and scout while Foyle, from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, will lead life skills and off-court curriculum development.
Also on the committee are Australia’s Patrick Hunt, president of the World Basketball Coaches Association, who will help find, recruit and train coaches, 1996 US Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Azzi, the global technical director for women’s programs, and former NBA head coach P. J. Carlesimo, an assistant coach on the 1992 US Olympic “Dream Team” who will recruit and train coaches with NBA experience.
