Angelique Kerber of Germany celebrates winning the first set against Pauline Parmentier of France on March 13, 2017 in Indian Wells, California
Two-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber reached the fourth round at Indian Wells by the skin of her teeth on Monday, out-lasting France’s Pauline Parmentier 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
Germany’s Kerber, who is assured of returning to number one in the world when the elite WTA event ends thanks to the injury withdrawal of Serena Williams, needed two hours and 33 minutes to get past the 62nd-ranked Parmentier who until this year had never won a match at Indian Wells in five prior appearances.
