Liverpool great Robbie Fowler has expressed an interest in the vacant coaching job at Australia’s Newcastle Jets, the club said Thursday.
Former England striker Fowler, 42, has been linked with the job since Mark Jones was sacked at the weekend after the Jets finished the A-League season with the wooden spoon.
Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna said an agent representing Fowler had contacted the club, putting his name forward as a possible replacement for Jones.
“I have received an approach from an agent who says he is looking after Robbie’s interests,” McKinna told The Australian newspaper, in comments that were confirmed by a club official.
“It is an interesting one and we would certainly have to look at it. He has a big profile and there would be some advantages to having him at the club.”
Fowler is no stranger to Australian football, having spent two seasons in the A-League playing with North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory.
McKinna said he had received plenty of coaching CVs from Australia and overseas.
“There has been plenty of interest, which is not surprising,” he said. “I will look to put a shortlist together in the next few days and then hold discussions with (Chinese owner) Martin Lee.
“We want something in place before the players break for their annual leave early next month.”
The Jets have already announced the signing of Irish striker Roy O’Donovan in a two-year deal from A-League rivals Central Coast Mariners.
