Women in Film, Television & Media Ghana Launches with ‘The Evolution Workshops’
The Women in Film, Television & Media Ghana (WiFT Ghana) officially launched its mission to elevate women in the country’s creative industries with a powerful inaugural event titled “The Evolution Workshops: Celebrating 20 Years in Film.” Held on March 8, 2024, at Jambo Spaces in Accra, the event marked a pivotal moment for gender equity in Ghana’s entertainment sector.
Organized in collaboration with the Her STEAM Initiative and Jambo Spaces, the workshop provided free training to 100 women, offering a comprehensive curriculum designed to equip participants with both creative and business acumen. The program aimed to address systemic barriers faced by women in film, television, and digital media by offering hands-on learning in areas such as cinematography, acting, branding, financial literacy, and content monetization.
The event began with the formal unveiling of WiFT Ghana, led by President Juliet Ibrahim, who outlined the organization’s vision to foster a supportive ecosystem for women in media. She emphasized the need for collective action, mentorship, and access to resources to ensure long-term success for women creators. “We are not just building a network—we are building a movement,” Ibrahim said.
The workshop featured a diverse lineup of expert-led sessions. Actress, entrepreneur, and licensed therapist Sonia Ibrahim opened proceedings with a session on “Mental Health in the Creative Arts,” spotlighting the emotional toll of creative work and the importance of self-care and support networks.
Participants then engaged in concurrent masterclasses covering vital industry skills. Kwame A.A. Opoku led a session on financial literacy and content monetization, while Godwin Namboh taught the basics of acting. Pascal Aka discussed the business side of acting, Jonathan Addey shared insights on cinematography and photography, and Juliet Ibrahim delivered a workshop on branding and personal development.
The event also included structured networking opportunities, media interviews, and refreshments provided by The Northern Bazaar. Notable figures from Ghana’s entertainment landscape lent their support, including veteran actress Pascaline Edwards, musician Mzbel, actress Charlotte Derban, media personality Akuapem Poloo, and filmmaker Michael Brako.
In her closing remarks, Juliet Ibrahim expressed gratitude to all partners, speakers, and participants, reaffirming WiFT Ghana’s commitment to ongoing education, advocacy, and mentorship. She emphasized that the organization will continue to grow through partnerships with institutions like the National Film Authority, Creative Studio Academy, and Verna Mineral Water.
With its first major initiative successfully launched, WiFT Ghana plans to expand its reach through regular training programs, industry dialogues, and career development initiatives. The organization aims to become a central hub for women in media, ensuring greater representation, equity, and innovation across Ghana’s creative economy.
