Ashanti Kente Week Celebrated March 23–31, 2026

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council has officially declared March 23–31, 2026, as Ashanti Kente Week, aligning with the broader observance of Ghana Month and the AshantiFest 2026 celebrations. This initiative aims to honor and promote the significance of Kente cloth—a woven fabric renowned globally for its vibrant patterns and deep cultural symbolism. As a powerful emblem of identity, craftsmanship, and heritage, Kente holds a central place in Ashanti tradition and national pride.

In a formal announcement, the Regional Coordinating Council urged all government institutions, corporate organizations, and public service agencies in the Ashanti Region to embrace the spirit of the celebration by incorporating Kente elements into their daily wear. This includes full Kente garments, Kente-inspired accessories such as scarves, ties, lapel pins, brooches, headbands, and other subtle designs integrated into professional attire. The call extends to all sectors, emphasizing that Kente is not only a cultural garment but a statement of pride in African heritage.

Religious institutions, including churches and mosques, are also encouraged to participate by inviting congregants to wear Kente during services. The council noted that the climax of the observance may be observed on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday between March 27 and 29, depending on each institution’s worship schedule. This flexibility ensures broad participation across faith communities and institutions.

The celebration culminates in a major cultural event on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at the Kumasi Cultural Centre. Organized in collaboration with the Manhyia Palace, the grand finale will feature cultural performances, a Traditional Food Fair showcasing Ashanti cuisine, and a Music and Jama Festival that highlights the region’s rich musical traditions. The event is expected to draw artists, artisans, and cultural leaders from across the Ashanti Region and beyond.

This year’s Kente Week underscores the enduring legacy of the Ashanti people and their contributions to Ghana’s cultural identity. As the nation continues to celebrate its heritage, the initiative reflects a broader movement to preserve and promote traditional African textiles on both national and international stages. The success of Ashanti Kente Week is anticipated to inspire similar cultural campaigns in other regions of Ghana.
