What Ghanaians Expect From 2017 Budget Statement

In line with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will present the 2017 budget and economic policy to Parliament on Thursday, March 2.

The budget which will be the first presentation of the Akufo-Addo led government will focus mainly on how government intends to roll out policies in the various sectors of the economy by looking at the measures in restoring fiscal discipline and good governance, transparent and accountable use of public resources.

President Akufo-Addo in his campaign messages during the 2016 elections promised to fix the economy by reducing taxes, providing policies for free secondary education which will commence this September, providing jobs for the youth, the one district one factory policy and many more.

Also, a statement from the Public Relations Unit of the Ministry of Finance said the 2017 budget will focus on stimulating growth and job creation through private sector development which the aim will be on getting Ghana to work again.

Moreover, a lot is expected from the current government as people ask questions on how they will fund projects which will be implemented by them since they allege the country is in huge debt with emphasis on ‘dumsor’, the saga on funding the free SHS programme, allowances of national service personnel, teacher trainee and nurses allowances.

Ahead of the budget reading, some Ghanaians have been sharing their expectations of what they expect Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta include in the Akufo-Addo-led administration’s maiden budget presentation.
