The ECG workers have been striking in protest of the planned concession of management of the company to a private entity, describing the recent happenings within the company as worrying.

The Director of Public Affairs and External Relations, Nana Yaa Jantuah spoke to Citi News and implored the ECG workers to put their customers first. Mrs. Jantuah urged the workers to “understand that this is an essential service. We need some kind of calm in the sector to be able to do what we have to do to ensure that consumer get the right kind of service.”

“We came out of load shedding and these things are not really good at this time when we need to makes sure there is a smooth stabilisation of power.”

Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), will today [Monday], continue with day two of their sit down strike.

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), last week directed ECG workers not to attend to official duties on Friday and today [Monday], until government backed down on its plan to cede part of the company to private investors.

PUWU has argued that the strikes are in protest of what it described as a disrespectful attitude exhibited towards them by the Millennium Development Authority (MIDA).

Customers have complained they have been unable to purchase prepaid credits for use during the strike period. But the ECG staff are still attending to critical areas like hospital theaters as well as security installations.
