The president made this statement when the Importers and Exporters Association paid a courtesy call on him at the Flagstaff House in Accra.

The Importers and Exporters had earlier made numerous calls on government to reduce most especially the numerous taxes at the ports.

The Association’s Executive Secretary Samson Asaaki Awingobit had asked government to review the ECOWAS Common External Tariff as well as the special import levy tax imposed on them.

“We just drew the Excellency the president’s attention that while he is now the new President of Republic of Ghana, we think it is important and prudent for us to also emphasize that there are taxes like the special levy import duty which we believe must be abolished. VAT 17.5% on the import duty and then the almighty ECOWAS Common External Tariff.”

In an interview with Citi Business News, Mr Awingobit maintained that he is optimistic President Akufo Addo will fulfill his promises to the Association.

“So these were some of the issues that we brought to the attention of the President and his responses were very optimistic. This alone tells us that we were very resolute that the president is very prepared to work with the private sector.”

Some importers earlier sought for the suspension of the tax stamp duty following what they refer to as the lack of consultation as well as excessive delays in the clearance process the policy will bring unto them.
