Spare parts dealers over the past few weeks have been agitating over government’s failure to scrap the duty on imported spare parts it promised in the 2017 budget statement.

However, government has assured it will execute all the tax cuts promised in the budget.

Speaking with Class Business in an exclusive interview, Assistant Commissioner of Import/Export at the GRA, Yakubu Seidu, explained that government was in consultation with relevant stakeholders on the implementation of some of the taxes it announced.

“Taxation is law, no one can impose tax on anybody in this country without the approval of parliament, so I will plead with you all that all the proposals that have been announced by government have been taken on board… we are going to implement. I will plead with you because it’s an issue of law. It is not that what government has announced is not coming on, but the process has to take some time,” he stated.

“Our colleagues at Abossey Okai and others, I will plead with you – we are looking at all your proposals to incorporate them into the harmonised system because once it is published it will be a unique document. And you know we also belong to our economic bloc, that is ECOWAS. There are processes that we will go through before we can change the rate that has been announced by ECOWAS. This could be some of the reasons why we are having a big delay in implementing the government’s proposals, but I’m telling you that it will not take a longer time. The fact is that we have to make sure it is legalised.”
