Transport Unions across the country have agreed to a 15 percent increase in transport fares.

The new fares will take effect on Thursday, April 5, 2017.

Speaking to this increment in a statement, AFAG says it “is opposed to this increment be it administrative or not”.

The group also expressed concern about the timing of the increment, stressing that their “worry stems from the fact that this increment is at a time the cedi is appreciating against the dollar and a reduction in crude oil prices”.

The group appealed to the transport unions to be considerate towards Ghanaians.

15% INCREMENT IN TRANSPORT FARES UNTENABLE

The recent 15% hike in transport fares shocks AFAG. Our worry stems from the fact that this increment is at a time the cedi is appreciating against the dollar and a reduction in crude oil prices.

We are worried about the Ministry of Transport involvement in this meeting with the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) executives to impose this 15% increment in transport fares on Ghanaians.

In no uncertain terms, AFAG is opposed to this increment be it administrative or not. Moreover, Inflation is on the decline, and the transport unions must bear with the already sorry state of the Ghanaian household.
