Sierra Leone Hero Ebola Doctor Infected with the Ebola Virus

Dr Sheikh Umar Khan has contracted the Ebola Virus. The Sierra Leonean virologist who has become a Sierra Leonean national hero for his selfless commitment in the fight against the Ebola epidemic is currently under intensive care after exhibiting symptoms of the disease. This news comes on the heels of the deaths of three nurses who worked with him at the Kenema Ebola Outbreak Treatment Center
The Sierra Leonean doctor had always been aware that he stood at a great risk of contracting the disease, due to his repeated exposure to infected patients during the cause of administering care. In spite of the danger, he continued assiduously with his work to reign in the spread of the epidemic.
Despite taking all the necessary protective measures to prevent direct contact with fluids containing the virus, Dr Kahn contracted the virus. The President’s office of the Republic of Sierra Leone confirmed this sad development to media outlets.
The Health Minister of Sierra Leone, Miatta Kargbo has pledged to do all she can to ensure the survival of Dr Kahn. It remains to be seen whether the current indisposition of Dr Sheikh Umar Khan will be deleterious to the campaign against containing the virus, which has claimed the lives of 650 West Africans.
