The new President of Tanzania, John Magufuli Pombe has suspended official trips abroad as of Saturday until further notice.
He’s insisting that the country’s embassies must be more diligent in their work, a statement from his office confirmed on Sunday.
President Magufuli who was elected on 25 October and officially sworn in last Thursday, announced his decision at a meeting with the permanent secretaries of various ministries, the Central Bank Governor and the Commissioner General of the Tanzanian Revenue Authority (TRA), according to the statement which was issued in Swahili.
The president “cancels all official trips abroad as from today (Saturday) until further notice and ordered that all activities abroad be carried out and supervised by the ambassadors of Tanzania in the concerned countries” the announcement made available to APA read in part.
At the meeting, the new leader also urged the Commissioner General of the TRA “to oversee revenue collection without fear or favour.”
He also ordered for the consolidation of public procurement to avoid exorbitant prices at the detriment of the state.
The Tanzanian leader also announced free secondary education beginning in January, fulfilling one of his campaign promises.
President Magufuli, renewed his appeal for hard work and eschewing corruption, ordering permanent secretaries to prepare for the implementation of these decisions ahead of his appointment of a new cabinet.
During his election campaign and his inaugural speech, John Magufuli Pombe had vowed an all-out war against corruption which is blighting economic life in Tanzania.
The opposition had often denounced the expensive trips abroad by former President Jakaya Kikwete and his ministers.
