Yesterday, Justin Bieber posted an underwear selfie that is causing quite a stir on social media. The multiple award-winning musician and producer was basically “grabbing his package” whilst taking the selfie.
The photo which as posted on Instagram included the hashtag #mycalvins, a campaign that Bieber has been promoting for quite some time. Other celebrities involved in the campaign have included FKA Twigs, Kendall Jenner and Kendrick Lamar.
There have been some interesting headlines capturing this special moment, such as “Justin Bieber Grabs His Package in New Mirror Selfie” (Entertainment Tonight), “Justin Bieber Flaunts Crotch-Grabbing Selfie” (Billboard), or “Justin Bieber: You Always Knew I Was a Handful” (TMZ).
It’s interesting to think about what the reactions might be like if this was a female celebrity, and by “interesting,” I mean “ridiculously infuriating.” There is an overriding sexism which allows for this kind of promiscuity in the hands of famous men, whereas a young women posting a similar photo would likely be hung in the court of public opinion.
